Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation offering advanced water safety
By release
Virginia Beach Parks and Recreation is offering a variety of advanced water safety classes this spring. These classes provide an opportunity for certification in the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Junior Lifeguard Water Safety Instructor Aide, Lifeguard Training Management and Water Safety Instructor programs.
And, since these classes are completed before the summer begins, this is an ideal time to become a certified lifeguard or swimming instructor and find that higher paying summer job.
Lifeguard Training classes begin in March, April, May and June. These classes teach pool lifeguarding skills and knowledge needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies.
Participants must be age 15 or older and pass an eligibility swim test. The class costs $125. Those who are currently certified American Red Cross lifeguards can take the Lifeguard Training Review class, offered in April for $45.
Junior Lifeguard Water Safety Instructor Aide classes are held in April, May and June. For $35, youth ages 10 to 14 may learn elementary forms of water rescue and become skilled at assisting swimming instructors.
Water Safety Instructor classes start in April and May. These classes, for individuals age 16 and up, train people to teach swimming classes. Passing an eligibility swim test is required. The cost to enroll is $150.
To register for any of these classes, visit or contact an aquatic supervisor at any Virginia Beach Recreation Center. A valid membership is needed.
